Brief History of the property:

The George H. Shafor House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed

in 1896 in the neo-classic style of architecture. Many Roman architectural elements are found

inside and outside the house including two carved Harpies in the pediment of the front porch.

George was the manager of operations for the Sorg Tobacco Company and was also involved in

banking. In 1906, at age 51 George married Effie Margerum who was 34 years old. After

George’s death in 1923 Effie married Charles Neiderlander, Vice-President of the First National

Bank, and they continued living in the house. Charles died in 1952 and Effie died in 1956. The

American Red Cross purchased the house in 1959 and used the property for their offices until

1990 at which time the property was concerted back to a single-family residence.
